The wood used in older furniture is almost always better due to vintage air drying techynoques. The wood is slowly dried and is far more stable than today's fast drying methods. This means that older air dried wood is stronger and more stable.
Most solid wood furniture purchased today is almost certain to shrink, warp, or crack. Ask your retailer if he will "guarantee in writing" that the solid wood furniture he is selling will not warp, shrink, or crack. According to an American survey, published in the Toronto Star, most new furniture in today's market is ultimately disposable, with built in "Planned Obsolescence" and designed to last for only a few short years.
Today's smart consumers are taking their heirlooms; inherited furniture; quality pieces that are of any age; and even purchasing 2nd hand items that are well made and are having them stripped and refinished in a custom stain to match their decor.
